GERMANY

SPEND A SEMESTER OR ACADEMIC YEAR IN IRELAND: A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FULL OF OPPORTUNITIES

Germany is a country that combines extraordinary cultural diversity, a fascinating history, and a modern, innovative society. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to broaden their personal and academic horizons.
One of the main advantages of living in Germany is the opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture that values efficiency, organization, and creativity. German cities offer a variety of experiences, from the vibrant Berlin with its artistic and cultural scene, to the tranquility of towns like Heidelberg or Freiburg, nestled in nature.
Living in Germany means adopting a balanced lifestyle that harmoniously combines work and leisure. German culture emphasizes respect for nature, the quality of local food, and a sustainable approach to daily life.

Structure of the German Lyceum

The years of high school, called Gymnasium, represent the most demanding educational path for students who wish to continue to university studies.

The Gymnasium generally comprises the last years of compulsory education and culminates with the achievement of the Abitur, the diploma that allows access to university.

The duration of the Gymnasium varies between 8 and 9 years, depending on the Land (federal state). The last two years, called Qualifikationsphase, are dedicated to preparing for the Abitur and include a system of credits and specialized subjects.

A PERSONALIZED PATH TO GROW IN SAFETY

The Gymnasium curriculum is broad and includes:

• German Language and Literature
• Mathematics
• Natural Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics)
• History and Geography
• Foreign Languages (usually English and a second language such as French, Latin or Spanish)
• Art and Music
• Civics and Religion/Ethics
• Physical Education

In the later years, students can choose some specialization subjects, which will have a greater weight in the Abitur exam.

A PERSONALIZED PATH TO GROW IN SAFETY

The school year in Germany generally begins in mid-August or early September and ends in June or July, with slight variations between the different Länder.

It is divided into two semesters, and there are several breaks during the year: autumn, Christmas, winter, Easter and the longer summer holidays.

Classes take place from Monday to Friday, with times that generally start at 8:00 and end between 13:00 and 16:00, depending on the study load.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

The grades are expressed in a numerical system from 1 (excellent) to 6 (insufficient).
The Abitur is based on a mix of grades obtained during the year and on the final tests, which include written and oral exams. The final Abitur score is decisive for admission to university and is based on a scale from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (sufficient).

DUAL DIPLOMA

Student life is particularly lively. Schools promote extracurricular activities such as sports clubs, cultural events and workshops. German cities are also well-organised and offer excellent infrastructure for young people, from efficient public transport to modern meeting spaces. Students also have the opportunity to travel easily throughout Europe thanks to the central location of the country. Schools offer sports, music and art clubs, and students can participate in social and cultural projects.

UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION

Germany is known for its commitment to inclusiveness and support for international students. Many schools offer dedicated services, such as academic tutoring and cultural orientation to help you adapt.
German society is generally open and welcoming, which helps you feel at home even when you are away from home.

THE MEASURE OF INTELLIGENCE IS THE ABILITY TO CHANGE

Unlike the Italian system, which divides high schools into various branches such as classical, scientific and technical, the German Gymnasium offers a single path with greater flexibility in the choice of specialization subjects. Furthermore, the German school calendar is slightly longer than the Italian one.
